About Me.

Charlene Fuentes, PSY. D.

I use a personalized, culturally-sensitive psychotherapy approach aimed at improving emotional and physical health. I focus on fostering a safe space for self-discovery, healing, balanced decision-making, increased confidence and life fulfillment. I hope to be part of your journey towards improving your overall health and transforming a life that you envision for yourself.

My Background

I am a San Francisco-based Clinical Psychologist specializing in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Health Psychology, and Behavioral Medicine. I provide psychological support to adults throughout California, working closely with primary care and specialty clinics in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. My approach focuses on integrating mental health care with overall well-being to help clients achieve their goals.

I'm also a clinical supervisor and behavioral health provider at Lyra Health, a mental health company dedicated to connecting employees and their dependents with personalized, convenient, and effective mental health care. Through innovative technology and programs, Lyra has made a positive impact on the lives of people worldwide. In my role, I work with clients who often have demanding schedules, helping them navigate the challenges of achieving a healthy work-life balance amidst competing priorities and everyday pressures. Stress can have a profound emotional and physical toll, and when unaddressed, it can feel overwhelming. I collaborate with individuals to develop effective strategies for managing everyday stressors and longstanding issues, all aimed at promoting personal growth and overall wellness.

I previously served as a Clinical Psychologist at San Mateo Medical Center (SMMC), a public hospital dedicated to supporting underprivileged residents in San Mateo County. In this role, I collaborated with primary care providers, medical specialists, and interdisciplinary team members to deliver comprehensive care to culturally and ethnically diverse patients facing mental health disorders and medical illnesses. During my time at SMMC, I focused on expanding behavioral health services within the Endocrinology Clinic and long-term care unit, providing essential psychological support to individuals and their families living with diabetes. Additionally, I held the position of Director of Training for SMMC's Medical Psychiatry Services’ Internship and Fellowship programs, where I supervised and coordinated the professional training and clinical work of Doctoral-level trainees across the division.

During my Doctoral Internship at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), I provided short-term psychotherapy to patients at San Francisco General Hospital. My treatment approach focused on resolving psychosocial issues and encouraging patients to engage in health-promoting activities. I also served as a consultant at the hospital's Diabetes Specialty Clinic, utilizing solution-focused interventions with patients. Additionally, I co-facilitated a Chronic Pain Management group and a Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for Depression group, where we taught patients various skills to improve their mood and physical health. Following my internship, I completed my Post-Doctoral Fellowship with California Pacific Medical Center’s Health Psychology Program, working collaboratively with medical providers to deliver integrated care. In this role, I provided brief psychological interventions to patients in Cardiac Rehabilitation, Radiation Oncology, Neurogastroenterology, and Diabetes specialty clinics. My work helped enhance patient care, support positive lifestyle changes, and improve medical outcomes.
